For me.. Nothing. Just like the same old 2008 and perhaps some of the previous years. Nothing changed besides the additional white hairs decided to make themselves more visible on top of my head. I have some expectation especially on my own self enhancement and yeah as for my family standard of living as well. I also learned not to expect ANYTHING in current situation also
and for that I need to plan for better future
So back to the original question.. What’s new for me in 2009? Getting myself busy with meetings either internal or external, applications evaluation and review, testing, some research, updating my CV devising new training regime, and yeah planning and EXECUTING the plan.
Sounds familiar? Well as those are the things that need to be performed on top of new tasks as well. Well that is the only aspect which is new currently. New additional tasks while everything else remain unchanged (I bet some of you – you know who you are- will laugh).
Rant on first few weeks of the year. Not bad

I’ve mentioned many times that the three key elements in managing your network security is Human, Process and Technology. Once you have the right combination and properly managed these elements, I think some how some way you’ll be OK. Anyway, just like the Risk Equation where risk = threat x vulnerability x asset value, the most difficult factor to manage is the one that related to human. You can evaluate, identify, perform feasibility studies on the technology that can be implemented in your network where hopefully this technology can be fully optimized in its usage with an acceptable cost. For process, we can follow, identify the acceptable standards which can be the guidelines or benchmark of our own acceptable usage policies and regulation. How about human?

2008 near its end. As usual during this period, I always looked back and try to find any milestone achievement for this year. Find any aspects that I can and must improve, acknowledge on the mistakes done or in other words, I’ll performed the “Lesson learned” analysis on myself. So far I am so grateful to my Maker for helping me achieve most of my goals of joining this company and involving in this industry or field. I have no complaints, no regrets but perhaps some disappointment as well. Well like what people said, you just can’t have it all or the term that I’ve learned in my Economic class back in 90s, “The next best alternative forgone.”

I had a very relaxing 4 days of internet free and work free. It seems that my twin is very very happy to see my face every single day, from morning till nite. Besides now they have this capability of climbing me with the motivation of playing with my spectacles. So most of the time I have to counter two attacks on my specs.
Anyway it seems that wifey became more grumpy lately. Every body will receive some sarcastic remark from her (including me ma). Well maybe because of work pressure. Well my dear, each of us understand what you have been through. With Adam and Ariff plus Iman’s behaviour definitely additional factors of her grumpiness.
Also my father is very happy with his retirement activities. He’s conducting Quality related trainings and from what he told us (my parent came to my house last weekend. My mom really misses my kids especially the twin so much) his income can easily reach RM 20K per month. So he suggests that we (the whole family including my bros family) have some family trip to Jakarta this August. Air fare, accommodation will be sponsored by him. And of cause me and my brother agreed Hehehhe. Thanks abah
Anyway, thanks for the overwhelming respond that I’ve received from my last post. I will review those CVs and perhaps will proceed to the next stage.
p/s: Randi, if you want, you need to ask Pak Abon’s permission maa

Do you have the required TEPES to be a Security Analyst?
T = Talent
E = Education (formal and informally – And yes certification just an added bonus and you must show that you are REALLY deserve to have those certificates)
P = Professionalism ( Right attitude maa)
E = Experience
S = Skills
If the answer is YES, do not hesitate to email me your CV, and even the answer is NO but if you think you can perform the tasks required, you also can email me as well.
Have the guts?

Yeah, to be honest, I dun really envy my Bosses job. Even though I just involve only a small portion of it, I can imagine what it would be in that position. With those budgeting, review reports, strategic planning, implementation plan, action plan, all those management thingy requires a different mindset and skills all together (and yeah, to implement those plans is another tough challenge that they need to face). Lol by looking on how wifey handling her job and the stress that comes with it is another lesson learned for me tho. Hehehe.

Anyway, if the plan MATERIALIZE, I have to start thinking on how to perform on those tasks. Of cause now I only realized how valuable are the management subjects that I’ve learned during my ICSA days. Anyway whether the plan materialize or not, I still do what I think I have to do (:P) as from my view, if there’s nothing significant happened NOW, at the end of the day I will be the SUPERMAN (need to do everything maa). Materialize or not, those are the challenge that I need and have to face. Fingers crossed and hopefully I can achieve all my targets and plan.

From time to time, I always ask a series of questions to myself. All these questions are related to the changes needed for me to move on or progress. And also most of the times there are few questions that I can answer and the balance will be left unanswered. But recently I managed to answer all those questions where the final question was “WHEN?”
WHEN in sense of the moment that I need to break myself from my comfort zone and embrace the challenges that may lay ahead.
In career wise, one of the main factors that really pushing me to the limits is wifey. She is the one who always remind me the needs of my own career enhancement. Every time when I told her how difficult for me to cope with the report writings, planning, slide preparation etc and how I longing to do what I do best especially on technical stuff, she just said,
“How long do you want to stuck with these technical stuff? Do you want to be a security analyst forever? You don’t have any other ambition?”
It is not easy to have a beautiful, business minded and money oriented lady as your wifey. Sigh
To be honest, I do agree with wifey opinions and questions. That’s why from time to time I’ve started to accept non technical tasks (not that many lor). That’s why I’ve accepted to conduct trainings to our client (initially I’ve decided to give it to someone else.
Ok cut the crap. To make the long story short, I have to change my mindset now. Less on the micro stuff but more on the macro thingy. So a strategic planning is a must (I’ve drafted some actually. It is more for my usage as somehow I do think that I am more structured type of man). This plan must cater the current needs and the future growth where the objectives, missions and visions must be exact, clear and precise. Of cause I also need to have the implementation plan as well. If not then the infamous quote of “We are very good in planning but bad in implementation” will be recited at my ears like a broken record
)
Time to move on and look ahead …

Hopefully ahead will not be that gloomy eh

Yeah, despite my ranting on how tiring my brain is lately and how I plan to take a 2 days leave, it seems like I’m in auto mode of waking up early in Monday morning and goes to work
I do feel not that comfortable of taking leave on Monday (yeah I do succumbed to Monday’s Blues syndrome) but Monday is the beginning of the week and usually every Monday will somehow indicates how the week will be. I don’t like to be left in the dark or loss the ability of knowing any head or tails of any events in the office. Workaholic ? Nahh.. I dun think so.
Anyway last weekend I’ve been asked to attend one function held by my company’s Technology Division. Details on that function can only be discussed internally eh. Hehehe. Anyway I need to perform one presentation on NSM (Network Security Monitoring) concept which personally I felt that 30 minutes was not enough but I’ve tried my best to sum up everything in the presentation slides. The outcome? You need to ask the audience lor. One thing for sure, we will incorporate this concept in our processes and human development. So to our competitors, watch out.. Heheheh
I am grateful and glad to be able to participate in those sessions held for that 3 days and also more than happy to be able to give inputs for future improvement. I also made some mental preparation on new tasks, challenges, missions and objectives for not only the company’s growth, but as my personal growth as well.
Anyway here are some pictures (my pics lah of cause) during those sessions.

Ain’t no political “ceramah”
