I’ve mentioned many times that the three key elements in managing your network security is Human, Process and Technology. Once you have the right combination and properly managed these elements, I think some how some way you’ll be OK. Anyway, just like the Risk Equation where risk = threat x vulnerability x asset value, the most difficult factor to manage is the one that related to human. You can evaluate, identify, perform feasibility studies on the technology that can be implemented in your network where hopefully this technology can be fully optimized in its usage with an acceptable cost. For process, we can follow, identify the acceptable standards which can be the guidelines or benchmark of our own acceptable usage policies and regulation. How about human?

As a human, I always have the softer side of me. I always fond of kids, small kids that is. I can’t stand seeing any kids crying. It either overwhelmed me with pitty and sadness or it will drives me crazy (especially when they are crying in the middle of the nite.. Hahaha). My tears nearly rained down from my eyes when I held my newborn child for the first time when I performed the obligatory “azan” and “iqamah” because everytime I recited those holy verse to their ears, they will look straight into my eyes. Another one is when they call me “papa” for the first time. Again I have to hold back my tears when hearing that word coming from their mouth for the first time. I felt it when Nisha called me “papa”, same feeling when Iman uttered that word and yesterday when Adam called me “papa”. I think my friend Mr. Adli from CyberSecurity put it nicely when he commented,
“That must have felt better than Pwn1ng a box or finishing your slides 2 minutes before the MC calls your name to take the stage
Priceless! Congratulations bro! “
Yeah, you are right Mr.Adli. It is a Priceless moment

Yup… I’m back at my parents’ house in Kuantan. Reached here last Saturday and at that time really looking forward spending some relaxing time here. But we can only plan as God always has something else planned for us right?
So that’s what happened on the first night spent without wifey around. It seems that all of us missed to be here in Kuantan so my kids spent most of their time here eating literally everything (including the twins as well). As the result? I barely get any sleep last nite as Nisha, Adam and Ariff decided that it was the good time to test their father’s patience and endurance by ejecting most of the content of the stomach via mouth in series of involuntary spasmic movements. In fact I smelled like those content of the stomach

I’ll be on leave from 15th December until 26th December 2008. That means I will have two nice work free weeks to spend with the kids and perhaps find some time for myself as well. There are many things that I’ve plan in my head on what I’m gonna do (besides looking after the kids). Maybe I could finish off any pending projects that I had like the assembly thingy, the analyst guidelines, malware thingy as well, and yeah my unit plan for next year. So, I’m looking forward for those nice, peaceful, works free holiday.

Yesterday… Yeah the first half of yesterday was quite boring. Probably because most of the people are not in the office and enjoying their extended holiday. So I end up working alone in the office and it kinda quiet. Too quiet for my liking. Anyway everything just like any other working days. Switched on my laptop, reading emails (surprisingly yesterday I received very very few emails compared to any other days), monitoring my facebook account, performing housekeeping of my laptop and of cause, finishing any outstanding tasks that I have. But, the same thing can’t be said for the second half of yesterday…

OK, now that we’ve get our hands dirty with the systems, perhaps we should make these machines linked together. What? You only have one system installed? C’mon.. Did I mention that you should have at least 2 different systems installed? No? My bad.. Please forgive this old man though
(Sometimes I think being older has its own advantages lol). Ok now carry on with your second or third operating systems installation and I’ll wait for you. When you’ve finish, I’ll show you how to link these machines via vmware using Host Based Network configuration. Carry on…

Initially I want to post a series of i-Hack Defense Challenge packet capture analysis using NetWitness Investigator but in the middle of medling around with the Investigator’s features and functions, one of the Analysts came and ask me a series of questions regarding the required knowledge and skills. Besides he is the first ever analyst ever to come to me and ask those questions, the most interesting question that he asked is “Where to Start?” So as a good (hopefully) person, I ask him to join me for tea break so we can discuss more freely on this topic which in the end we end up discussing in heavy downpour. Not a good decision I guess..

I’m planning to take a long leave (depends on how many annual leave that I have left for this year) next month. It is better for me to take what ever leave balance that I have because at the end of the day, I can only take 5 days of my annual leave to next year. Last year, I think I had few days of annual leave wasted just like that and I wont let that happen this year… So what am I going to do during those “holiday”?

Ok, I did mention few times in my blog that CLI is the THING and GUI only for WIMP users
. I seldom use wireshark compared to TShark, more on tcpdump.. You know the CLI thingy. But then I’ve read many times about this one tool. Some people said that it would replace wireshark later on but those guys behind this tool said it should never replace wireshark but should be used WITH wireshark instead. So what the heck, I just browse to this tool’s developer web site and decided to download it. Ok you need to register and activate this software as well but I think adding applications into my facebook interface is much more complicated ;P (yeah yeah, I have a facebook account. No big deal
Guys, this tool is impressive.. Even for CLI-is-the-best-zealot like me
