Yesterday… Yeah the first half of yesterday was quite boring. Probably because most of the people are not in the office and enjoying their extended holiday. So I end up working alone in the office and it kinda quiet. Too quiet for my liking. Anyway everything just like any other working days. Switched on my laptop, reading emails (surprisingly yesterday I received very very few emails compared to any other days), monitoring my facebook account, performing housekeeping of my laptop and of cause, finishing any outstanding tasks that I have. But, the same thing can’t be said for the second half of yesterday…

Thankfully wifey decided to fetch me from the office instead of my usual LRT commuting. Anyway that because my daughters, Iman and Nisha decided to stay at my mom-in-law’s house at Desa Pandan. For Iman perhaps that’s the safe house from any do and don’t, while for Nisha, that’s the only place where she will be spared from any “sifir” questions and books summarization (OK not books but paragraphs) from her father. So after sending all the necessary items to wifey’s mom house (Milk, clothes, Iman’s night pampers, breads etc), we drove to Kinrara to have dinner (wifey’s yet to have her meals for the day – magic).

Along the way, I keep on lamenting on the current situation of the company and the current state that they are in. Unfortunately, just ahead from Shell station (that located right after TPM, towards Kinrara) the road has this hole which I bumped in on the night before but luckily I didn’t drive that fast as “Twins on board”. Last night as “Twins no longer on board” I successfully hit that damned hole again and managed to puncture the tyre and bent the rim as well. Wonderful.

This is not The pot hole.

So I parked the car in front of the new SIRIM office (located at the Puncak Jalil junction) and scrambling for the jack, spare tyre and other necessary tool. After some hard labour, I managed to take out the puncture tyre and when I held the spare tyre, that tyre was not inflated at all. And the best thing is, it also has bent rim, similar the punctured ones.

Thankfully wifey’s colleague was around to help us, in fact he helped us many times before and both of us owe him big time. I need to devise something to show our gratitude towards him. Ahh btw, he is a Chinese and to our leaders up there at Putrajaya, we dun have any problem regarding the skin colors, race or religion. In fact I think our leaders up there exaggerate most of the things. Racial tension? C’mon.. Open your mind lil bit lor. The important thing is respect and acknowledged other people differences. Not hating them for that.

So as today, the rim need to be sent to the “specialist”(according to the workshop), and then they can replace my front tyres. So for time being, we will use the spare tyre for a lil longer..

Say NO to pot-holes

Starting from today until this coming Sunday, I’ll have to play wifey’s roles. Wifey is away as she’s participating her company’s sports day held at Awana Kijal. Based on the information given by wifey, she will be representing her team in volleyball match (And I would love to see that actually lol). Anyway  both of us had discussed this for quite some time ago. I guess maybe wifey felt that it would be tough for me to handle the kids by myself. Especially when I need to ensure that Adam and Ariff will put in bed on time.. Deep inside I have to admit that some of wifey’s concerns are true but I’ll try my best to prove her wrong.

Initially the plan is that all of us will travel back to Kuantan where at least my mom can assists me whenever she can. But then since our car is yet to be completely fixed by the workshop, we have to scrap this plan alltogether.

Then wifey sugested that all of us stay at her mom’s house at Desa Pandan when she is not around. But I told her that it is better for us to stay at our own house because I do feel that at Desa Pandan, there are lack of privacy lil bit. Plus I dun want to burden my mother in law as well. She has another 3 children to worry. Having my children there will not helping her at all. Until today I still believe that my mother in law should have a good rest and peaceful life. Most of wifey’s siblings are grown up and working. It should be them who help my mother in law instead.

So wifey agreed that everybody should stays at home until she returns from Terangganu. I’ve sent her this morning to her office and yeah, I do feel lil bit sad to let her go (not because I have to look after the children by myself) but then I think it is time for wifey to have some free and fun time for herself. Well when I was away to Jeddah and to Singapore, she didn’t complaint at all and compared to this, I was away longer than hers.   So no complaint lor..

To wifey, we do miss you and have a good fun, enjoy break with your colleague. Dun forget to snap some pictures eh . Let me worry about the kids. Hehehe

Last nite, wifey asked me to help her to prepare some simple network diagram for her proposal to this one partner. She had a meeting in the morning with this partner’s principal consultant (they are one of the software developers if I’m not mistaken) on the hardware and setup requirement that wifey’s company need to propose for this partner’s Business to Customer (B2C) online solutions. Basically this partner main intention is to reduce the amount of servers at their client site when providing their solutions. No problem with that but then when wifey blurt out the requirements and the must have components in her proposal, I start to think that this requirement is more on cost cutting measures in order to maximize this partner’s profit..

Basically, they require around 4 servers to host their web server, application, database and development. Additional condition that must be met by wifey’s proposals are (based on what wifey told me)

a). Fail Over capability

b). High Availability

c). Clustering

d). A DRC (Disaster Recovery Center)

Cool but then based on those requirements, how on earth you can reduce the amount of servers? As based on those, I believe the minimum amount of server shud be at least 7 servers. Ok now let we assume that this principal consultant just want a minimal High Availability Cluster (2 nodes), for his web, application and database. Meaning he needs at least minimum 3 servers to host those components and additional 3 servers on top of the existing one. Why? Because of High Availability and Clustering purpose. Agree?

But wait, those servers are only at the main site, how about the DRC (Disaster Recovery Center)? The purpose of having DRC is to ensure the continuity of the services offered. Ever heard about BCP? (Business Continuity Plan? Every single year our department will be harrassed by the Auditor on this mater ). Again at least whatever that you have in DRC must be the same with the ones that you have in your main site. And yeah I believe that the data must be synchronize between these two sites. Agree? For that case another 6 set of servers (if you are too concern with your money then maybe you can have the main servers there and pray that the recovery process of the main site will be done in light speed time. Just pray )

The best thing is, they want the basic feature (or I can call entry level) type of server to host all their applications. They have the intention to have application and database to reside in one server. That is no big deal actually but if the database application minimal requirement == the server hardware specification, do you believe that both the database and application will run smoothly? I have my doubt. It just like when you find out that your PC only meet the minimum requirement to have Windows Vista running on your machine. You can have that operating system installed in your machine, but then the performance will be not as good as PC that meet the recommended requirement. Rite?  Their reasoning is simple, they want to use the entry level first, then they will start to upgrade the hardware from time to time. Lol, then we can hear their customer complaints on the frequent down time of their services from time to time

Another weird thing is, when wifey asked about this partner’s application hardware requirement, they replied to wifey, “you should advice us on that.” Now that’s funny.

How on earth do she know the nature of your application, how many resources that it may consume per concurrent users either during the peak time or not. How many resources the application may consume for the maximum concurrent users accessing the application? Did they ever do any stress test or similar test for their application? I ain’t no a software developer, but from my experience mingling with those guys, the usual practice is these guys will give the hardware requirement to have their application or software running smoothly. I guess that’s why before you installing any software, you can see the minimum and recommended hardware requirement for that particular software? I don’t know about you but for me this sounds ridiculous.

My advice to wifey is, ask the partner to provide some information on their application. What are the minimum hardware requirement that their application required to run, what are the recommended requirement.To be honest, for a server that is running Intel Processor with 4 GB memory and only 160GB storage space to host your B2C software and database, I think it is questionable. What do you think.

I think I did mention that I have intention to buy Hyundai Starex as our family mover but I think as far as I know I never mention WHEN I’m going to buy it. Maybe next year or maybe next two years, nobody knows. However yesterday, my current ‘ol Hyundai Accent decided to test its strength by banging onto a proton Saga BLM or my insurance agent call it “Proton Saga Robocop” with the little help from wifey and that chinese lady. Thank God and Alhamdulillah, both of the drivers didn’t suffer any physical injuries make it internal or externally. Besides that like what wifey said, ” Sakit Hati”  To sums up this accident, the offender actually is that chinese lady as she lil bit hesitate in deciding whether to go or not to go. Well the policeman also agree on this matter as well. I do pity with that young lady. I believe she just received her license (based on the “P” sticker at her windscreen) and her brand new Proton Saga Robocop BLM. But accident happens eh?

Wifey said that she stepped on the brake pedal as hard as she could. She floored the brake pedal.

And BANG!!!.. This is the result..

That young lady’s car. She said wifey was speeding. But IMHO IF wifey’s speeding, she probably will banged the passenger’s door and not at the front side. And both of them will suffers some injuries as well

At least she still can drive her car around while our car will be stranded at the workshop for quite some time tho

Yup.. the bumper is gone and I can peek under the hood without lifting its cover

So for time being, we will using the car supplied by the workshop and I do believe it will be has manual transmission. Meaning I will do most of the driving as wifey seems to have this memory lapse on how to drive manual transmission’s car. Perhaps I need to perform memory dump from her brain and look whether there’re bad sectors or tracks. Maybe I just use dd

In my opinion, that remark is lil bit not that too professional. Why? Because first of all still a proper unit cohesion, planning, organization and execution of the plan required to achieve(or over achieve in this case) whatever goals. So for wifey roles in her new company soon, she needs to plan, organizing, controlling, commanding and co-ordinating (as far as I remembered my Management Principles subjects).

Okay, basically the roles that I’ve mentioned above is the summarize of th 14 Henri Fayol’s Management Principles. So for wifey what she has to do (again) is:

PLAN = Examining the future and preparing the action plan. The element of strategy. So reading financial /budget report/forecast is a must for wifey )

ORGANIZE = build up structure, material and human resource

COMMAND = To maintain the activity among the personnel

COORDINATE = Binding together, unifying and harmonizing all activity and effort.

CONTROL = Seeing that everything occurs in conformity with established rules and expressed command.

Wifey is entering a new era of challenges, work scopes and responsibilities where her judgment or decision will has impact on her unit or department. I wish her a very best of luck and yeah, it is my responsibility also to support or assists her in term of some advice or perhaps just be a good listener.

But there’s no way I want to read those financial/budget reports or forecast and give wifey the summary.
