I am easily distracted from my work. My Big Boss request for an evaluation of this one application that I can call as one of the Unified Threat Management Systems available in the market. Plus this network gateway security application has won the 2008 Best Gateway Security for Open Source by Infoworld BOSSIES award. The name of this apps is Untangle. Like other UTMS, Untangle offers 3 types of services where Spam Blocker, Web Filter and Protocol Control for Productivity while under Security service it has Virus Blocking, IPS and others. Other functions like Remote Access, Reporting and Networking also offered by Untangle. And yes, Untangle was built based on Debian via Knoppix
(Discovered when the message appeared during shutting down procedure of Untangle
Anyway, as usual I decided to give it a test run on my VMWare (a big mistake later on) WITHOUT reading the minimum requirement to have this application installed and running properly. Anyway I am too lazy to burn the iso (because I didn’t have any empty CD, only DVD) and it is easier to use VMWare as the iso can be used directly. However, because of this ignorance, of cause my attempt to have Untangle installed quashed by my own stupidity ;P
As a result, I scrambled into our Operation Center and managed to get one 1U server for testing. I think with this minimum requirement for Untangle to properly running on the machine, a server with 2.4GHz for processing power, 4GB of memory and 1 TB of disk space is sufficient enuff compared to my 1.6GHz, 256MB and 5GB disk space allocation for Untangle portion in my VMware. And yes, I have to burn the iso.
I’ll post updates on this application as soon as I have it successfully installed.

i have test untangle before installed in the vmware server, what i think is, the gui was a little bit over and annoying and it will eat the server memory more rather than the service it self
go go go, waiting for your further report ayoi!
