Sorry to disappoint you guys but I do use Windows XP Profesional with Service Pack 2. I think I did state that for Desktop (daily usage), I’d prefer windows (still). My sguil client is windows based. Why windows? Because IMHO it’s user friendly :)) (ok besides the fatal error messages which surprisingly I didn’t face that kind of problem..yet). Easier for me to prepare my reports (I am used to MS words instead of Kwriter etc), and many other activities. Oh yeah, I can play Football Manager as well.
I have Virtual Machines which both of them having FreeBSD as their OS. One of the machines were used as sguil server while the other act as the sensor. But as the data increases, the sql queries became slower ( I only allocate 256MB for my virtual machines) and finally i abandoned the idea of using vmware as my sguil server. For time being I am using one of the machines in the SOC as the sguil server. And yes its OS is FreeBSD.
It is not the OS but IMHO everything is depends on the usage of the machines. Desktop? = windows, Webserver? I’d prefer freebsd or openbsd anytime. I’m not into linux (no offence and not because it’s not good and spare me the which-is-better-bsd-or-linux argument) but I think bsd is far more easier to customize. Hey customizing/tuning bsd kernels are far more easier than linux’s
If you are comfortable/familiar/have sufficient knowledge or in other words, know whut the hell are you doing on certain OS , then go for it. If you know how to use Windows as a webserver or other services (I mean the proper ways, how to secure, tweak etc) then go for it. If you know how to use linux inside out as a Network Operating System, then use it. Don’t use linux/BSD because u do feel like a 1337 and u think that 1337 only use unix based OS. Also because all the so called sifus (I hate this titlement. Everybody is learning beb) is using Unix variant OS.
I ain’t a 1337, that’s why I am using windows ![]()
